material hunt*

basically, in this week i hv been to few different hardware stores, n called up few different suppliers (timber n plastic)...

and i found out there are lots of difficulty when 'hunting' for the materials i need..

-for most of the suppliers as they said the juz do wholesale..so i got rejected from most of them....
-wen i found sumfink dat i need usually got out of stock..mayb they dun hv stock..
-also i hv to deal wiv the delivery issue, coz sum of the hardware store actually doing free delivery but they charged their item in a vy high price...so i wud hv to figure out..lyk if i found sumfinks dat is cheap/ reasonable price...but they charge approx.50 bux for delivery.. (n its depends on wut kind of car/truck/urt, n of coz da larger car cost more)...

insipiration

i have come up wiv few differents ideas..exhibition space, cafe/lounge ,performance stage

which i try to relate to the issure for the community, try to do sumfink dat can gathering them up, connect or chat to each other.trying to find a wait they dun really need to speak english, mayb sum of them cant really speak english and hving a difficulty...a place that cud b a moment to enjoy together, that place require to have a common language that every1 noes....music, pic, live tv....

i reckon this sort of things really helps in the ideas..it relate to the topic to the design...i wanna create sumfink unusal..people ll easily understand try to keep everything simple..

section 8 container bar@melbourne

bar in a lane

i have visit the site which had provide from the list of reference on the brief...i have never notice diz place everytym wen i walk pass...hm...afta the visit i realize its really clever..how they transform the thing from a shipping container to a bar and toilet(2 seperate containers)..basically the bar has everything it needs refrigerator, lighting, hand wash, vent three bar table(da table is part of the container by flapping down da walls)..

newaiz here are sum describtion of the bar:

Section 8 opened with a big bang. Located in a Chinatown car park next to the iconic Shanghai Dumplings restaurant, the bar?s opening stayed true to the traditions of it?s neighbours with lion dances, firecrackers and even had honorable John So gracing the event.

Avid Melbourne bar lovers Sean, Richard, Maslyn and Craig have always been into the city?s bar scene and during one fateful booze-fuelled session, the idea of starting Section 8 materialised. Klinger from cult comedy M*A*S*H was the inspiration for the bar?s name. Section 8 was the term for the mentally insane discharge that could have been his ticket out of the war zone. The four boys figured that since they?re part insane themselves, why not?

Section 8?s subterfuge style might have people walking straight by mistaking it for an abandoned car park. The bar itself was fashioned from an ex-shipping container and the seating area made up of neatly stacked wooden crates. Sean says this untouched urban feel was achieved with the help of architectural company Diretribe. On closer observation the giant letters covering the car park floor make up the spelling for ?diretribe? and ?section 8? jumbled in a haphazard way.
Section 8 carries eleven different beers, four reds and whites, and a promising cocktail list is currently underway. In the morning, Section 8 serves up refreshing ?slow food? breakfasts and smoothly changes to a cool bar lit with Chinese lanterns in the evening.

wutz a prefab?

prefab = prefabricatedThis term is wide open to interpretation.
prefab home = "kit home" = "panelized home" = "pre-cut home" = on-site assembly from prefab components.
The components are either generally available when the structure is designed or they are created specifically for the project (i.e. designed for reproduction)

mobile home*
manufactured off-site,transported to the site in a largely completed state.minimal on-site labor.

*mobile home is a technical term for a structure that was constructed before June 15, 1976 and meets certain criteria defined by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Regulations distinguish a “mobile home” from a “HUD-code manufactured home” which is a structure constructed on or after June 15, 1976 and meeting slightly different criteria than a "mobile home". "mobile home" is frequently used in the vernacular, even by HUD who often refer to "manufactured (mobile) homes". Further info here.Info credit: Kevin Dickson.

portable architecture

wutz da defination of portable architecture?

a building dat can move around..
it can b anywhere, allow u to carry wiv you into different place, not a fixed structure, easy to install/setup
example of portable architecture..carivan, tent,infatable building (circus)...etc

Nearly every American house I've lived in has long ago been demolished to make room for some other building. There is a delicious (though painful) paradox here: Americans long for stability, but all they get is stationary impermanence. No wonder then many of us long to become permanent nomads, snails with houses on our backs, Touareg tribesmen, and Gypsies."?Poet Andrei Codrescu, from his introduction to Mobile: The Art of Portable Architecture by Jennifer Siegal

Architecture schools teach statics ?the branch of structural analysis based on the principle that buildings should be stationary and motionless. Civilization, too, teaches "statics" when it halts nomadic cultures, asserts the idea of living in one place, and attempts to freeze buildings in place and in time. In a counterpoint to these lessons, Jennifer Siegal's Office of Mobile Design (OMD) challenges current models with designs that are flexible and mobile and that reach toward a different way of thinking about how we live.

Since 1998, OMD has been looking at ways to rethink standard modes of mobile living, focusing especially on the much maligned "mobile home." Siegal's dream is to reinvent a mobile house, retaining the concepts of affordability and flexibility but shaking up the bland design notions that now dominate the genre.

Portable Housing

The "portable house" was one of the first manifestations of her concept of new nomadism. It was designed to provide alternatives for those who have disposable income but not enough capital to enter the standard housing market. Siegal's portable house has expandable and contractible spaces and varying degrees of transparency in materials with the intention of providing a richness of experience in a simple form.
Her portable house has a central kitchen/bath core with sleeping areas to one side and an expandable living area on the other. As climatic conditions change, the house can be reoriented to take advantage of sun and natural ventilation. Units can be grouped to form larger social entities and common spaces. Or multiple units can be connected to create a larger space for a family.

The portable house ?"a mass-customized residential building unit" ?also incorporates several sustainable strategies and materials. It has a natural ventilation periscope, advanced plastic-foam insulation, and floors of plyboo, a laminated bamboo product.

Siegal sees such buildings that are mobile and "rest lightly on the land" as an alternative to urban sprawl. One of her office's most recent projects is Ecoville ?an artist-in- residence community near the heart of downtown Los Angeles.
In Ecoville, portable houses are stacked in a variety of configurations. Sustainable strategies include drought-resistant plants, common gardens, and green building materials.........

L.ve House
Mobile Performance Buildings
Freight House Project

Industrial Design Upper Pool Design Studio, GRAP 1034 / 1035 / 2221, Semester One, 2008

L.ve House
Mobile Performance Buildings
Freight House (25% due in Week 6)

Much of the world's freight is moved around in shipping containers. They are mobile modular structures of a standard dimension. They are designed to be fastened together, stacked, mechanically lifted, and mounted to a range of vehicles, secure, and weatherproof. There are literally millions of them globally, and many have reached their serviceable life. For these reasons, they have inspired many architects and designers as a ready solution for low cost modular building applications. We are going to use this system of containerisation to explore themes and principles relevant to the Live House Studio, in particular packing and performance.

You are required to design a Freight house using a single 20-foot shipping container as a starting point. You will need to propose a series of features and mechanisms that give it the ability to transform from its standard freight form to a configuration capable of providing a useful service.

There are many examples of innovative applications of containers. I have provided a list of some of those possibilities below, with links to several of those examples. Please also see the references provided for the Research Report. There is also a list of processes used in unpacking and packing for you to investigate. Your proposal needs to be realistic, utilising current inexpensive technologies. You will need to provide examples of systems and technologies from other products and applications to validate the feasibility of your concept.

You are to explore and present the project using animated 3D CAD models and/or physical working scale models. Please thoroughly document the development of your concept.

Some important questions to address are:
‧ What service will your Freight House provide?

‧ What are the appropriate features required to provide that service?

‧ How can you maximise the available space and number of features of your Freight House, while retaining its capacity to be freighted using existing container transportation and handling systems?

‧ What are the most appropriate mechanisms for transforming your house from its freight mode to working mode? ‧ How might this transformation entertain and intrigue?

"illy’s innovative Push Button House, designed by noted artist/architect Adam Kalkin, was on display at New York City’s Time Warner Center from November 29 – December 29, 2007. Originally unveiled at the 52nd Venice Biennale in June, 2007, the illy Push Button House is a fully functional and sustainable home built within an industrial shipping container. At the push of a button, the shipping container transforms into a five-room home with kitchen, dining room, bedroom, living room and library.... "
